Цель: Совершенствовать коммуникативные умения в различных видах речевой деятельности, в том числе умение работать в паре, группе, планировать свое речевое поведение, умение применять полученные знания на практике. Углубить знания учащихся о великих людях.

S: I want to become a doctor (programmer, nurse, chemist (pharmacist), translator, police inspector, tourist agent, an economist).

II.4. Well, all of you have dreams and want to achieve them. But you should work a lot to reach your goals. Thomas Edison wrote, “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”. Today we’ll speak about people, who overcame difficulties and became famous. Some students have made presentations and want to introduce their projects to you. Listen carefully, because then you’ll take the test.

Thomas Edison was a school dropout, yet he became one of America’s most famous and most honoured man.

S2 (Kate) will tell you about the sixteenth president of the USA Abraham Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln

The life story of the sixteenth president of the United States is famous, because it has become the typical story of American success. Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin to a poor family and grew up to become the President of the United States. It took him thirty years to achieve his dream, but he never gave up.

Abraham Lincoln attended school for a total of about one year. With the help of his stepmother he taught himself how to read and write.

Abraham Lincoln is well-known and loved by Americans for his honesty, intelligence and humanity. Many Americans think that in their country a man may rise from the lowest to the highest position in their land. That was exactly what Lincoln did.

S3- Ludwig van Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven is considered to be one of the greatest composers who ever lived. He was born in Bonn, Germany. His father taught him piano and violin- hoping that he would earn money, as the composer Wolfgang Mozart did . Beethoven’s instruction was poor until he was able to study under court organist Christian Neefe, who drilled him in the music of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Neefe helped the young composer publish his first compositions.

Developing himself more and more to composing, Beethoven made fewer appearances as a pianist. From 1801 his hearing grew steadily worse. Proud and independent, Beethoven tried to hide his affliction from society, withdrawing into isolation and devoting himself to his work. In his last years he was completely deaf.

His last string quartets suggest a triumphal peace over his sufferings. Beethoven affirmed to the whole world his independence as a free composer, in contrast with others who were supported by rulers and often treated as servants.

Henry Ford (1863-1947)

Henry Ford was a man who transformed the world. The car he built changed the lives of people everywhere. In 1896, Ford succeeded in building an automobile powered by a gasoline engine. He built his engine in his kitchen sink. In 1903, Henry Ford established the Ford Motor Company and introduced the Model T Ford.

Henry Ford wanted to make a car that everyone would be able to afford. He was able to lower the price of the Model T by introducing mass production assembly line techniques.

S5- George Lucas.

George Lucas.

George Walton Lucas is an American film producer, screenwriter and entrepreneur. He founded Lucasfilm Limited and led the company as the chairman before selling it to the Walt Disney Company . He is best known as the creator of Star Wars . His first script for the film was initially rejected by various studios. If he had given up at this point, he would have never seen Star Wars become one of the most popular films of all times!

George Lucas was born in 1944 in Modesto, California. Before Lucas became interested in film-making, he wanted to be a race- car driver. At the age of eighteen he got in a car accident and lost interest in racing as a career. His passion for cars and motor racing later inspired some of his films (American Graffiti). Lucas is one of the most successful film-makers. I enjoy watching his films.

II.5. So, you see that it took Abraham Lincoln thirty years to become the President of the USA. George Lucas, Beethoven, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford had to overcome a lot of obstacles but they didn’t give up. Only imagine that Henry Ford built his engine in a kitchen sink!

S6 – I’m a really artistic person and my dream has always been to become a professional artist. For me, choosing a career is not only a matter of future prestige and wealth. A job should be interesting and fascinating. I love the process of creating something from nothing and expressing on paper a thought of image that I have in my mind. I know how difficult it is to succeed. Few artists earn enough to make a living from their art. But my teacher says that I’m talented and I’ll try to do my best to achieve my dream and be successful! I’m sure that if you believe in yourself and take practical steps, your dreams will come true! Never give up hope!

III.1. Well, today we have spoken a lot about your future, dreams and hopes. We’ve learned how to make your dreams come true. Let’s revise. What practical steps can you take to help make your dreams come true? Right you are. The first step- Believe in yourself. The second step- take steps to achieve your dream. And the third step- don’t give up!

Never say never! Believe you can climb the mountain, swim that ocean or reach that place, and surely one day you will! There would be no Ford cars, Star Wars, light bulbs or Beethoven symphonies if this was not true! I wish you good luck!
