My mum cooks something special for New Year’s dinner. We all help her. We like to follow the new trend and celebrate New Year wearing same colours as the colour of the animal in Chinese calendar. For example, when we celebrated the New Year of the Red Monkey, we wore red and orange. It is believed, that following this tradition will bring you lots of luck in the new year.
We usually watch different New Year programmes on TV on this day. When the clock on the Kremlin tower strikes midnight, we, according to the long-standing tradition, make our wishes and give each other compliments of the season. After that we exchange gifts with each other.
When I was little, I always looked forward to the coming of New Year. I am a lot older now but have the same feeling in my heart. For me, New Year is the night when air is filled with magic, this is the time of new hopes and aspirations, a feeling of easiness and joy. This is the time when I want to live, enjoy my life to the full and move forward!

New Year is the most long-awaited (долгожданный) holiday. Many people associate it with magic and gifts. First of all it is surrounded by the wonderful smell of tangerines and Christmas trees, which helps to create a festive mood (праздничное настроение). People of all ages truly (искренне) believe that in New Year their goals (цели) and wishes will come true.
New Year is an international holiday, but in every country it is celebrated in many different ways (разными способами) and each family has their own traditions. For example, in Australia, people celebrate the New Year on the beach or go on picnics with friends. In Italy, the New Year begins on January 6. Here people believe in the good fairy Befana, who gives stars and gifts for everyone. In Israel, people at on the New Year eat only sweets and avoid bitter (горький) food. In Spain on this day there is a tradition to swallow (глотать) one grape (виноград) for every time the bell chimes (звон курантов) and make a wish.
On New Year my family and I decorate the house and the Christmas tree and give each other gifts, wishing success (успех) in the New Year.
New Year’s Eve is my favorite holiday and I always look forward (ждать с нетерпением) to it.
My name is Catherine. I am fourteen years old. New Year is considered the most popular holiday in our family. At the beginning of December everybody has a festive mood. In the city the streets and shop windows are decorated with bright and motley garlands. A huge Christmas tree is put at the main square. We begin to prepare for the holiday. We buy Christmas-tree decorations, tinsel and gifts for each other at New Year’s fairs.
At the end of December we put artificial Christmas tree and decorate it for the holiday. I help my mother to prepare a festive table on December 31. New Year’s Eve always seems to me magical and unforgettable. At midnight after president’s appearance on television chiming clock begins to strike. We wish each other a happy New Year and make a wish and then exchange gifts. When I was a child I found the gifts under the Christmas tree and I thought that Santa Claus had brought them.
Although I’m already adult and I don’t believe that Santa Claus exists, on New Year’s Eve I want to find myself in the dream and to believe in a miracle.

Holidays make our life brighter and more interesting. They have different meanings and their own history. During our holidays we can have some fun and just relax. Since my childhood one of my favourite holidays has been New Year’s Day.
New Year’s Day is the best time for me to spend with my family in the magical and festive atmosphere, with delicious food. Schoolchildren love this time because it’s a great start оf their winter vacation. When I was a small child I wrote letters to Father Frost and asked him for some sweets and a toy as a present. I also painted New Year greeting cards and put them under my parents’ pillows.
We usually start getting ready for the New Year’s Day in advance: we prepare presents, buy muсh food and decorate our house and the New Year tree. We also go shopping to find some nice clothes because it’s a good tradition in our family to celebrate the New Year’s Day in new clothes.
My mother always holds a real feast: she makes lots of salads, meat dumplings, cooks chicken with vegetables and bakes fruit tarts. They all taste fantastic. We watch entertaining programmes on TV and set off firecrackers in the yard. Sometimes we go to the central square to watch colourful carnivals, concerts and fireworks. Adults also have a ten-days’ holiday and it gives them a chance to visit their relatives and friends and enjoy the time together. We also have enough time to travel, indulge in sports and other hobbies.
I really enjoy New Year’s Day and every year I look forward to celebrating it with my family.

There are many holidays in our country. They are: New Year’s Day, Christmas, Women’s Day, Victory Day, May Day and others.
I like New Year’s Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year.
Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year’s Day.
The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don’t go to school and my parents don’t go to work.
We usually have got a very interesting New Year’s party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December.
Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year’s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year’s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.
My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake.
All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o’clock in the evening.
At 12 o’clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, “Best wishes for the New Year!”
I hope that next year will be better than the last one.
The New Year’s Day is always connected with our new hopes and dreams.
It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year’s Eve.
I usually get many nice useful things from my parents and relatives.

We always celebrate New Year at home. A week before the holiday we begin to decorate our house with lights and garlands. We also put up a New Year tree and decorate it with balls, cones, icicles and other toys, tinsel and lights. Under the tree we usually put statuettes of Father Frost and Snow Maiden. We put New Year presents there too.
On the 31st of December we always cook salads. My mother usually roasts meat and boils potatoes. She always bakes our favourite Napoleon cake. We watch New Year programmes and films on TV.
At about ten o’clock we all sit down at the table and have a meal. Just before midnight we light sparklers and my father opens a bottle of champagne. We watch the president’s speech on TV, and then while the clock is striking midnight, we make wishes and drink champagne. After that we go to the balcony to watch fireworks.
When we come back into the room we open our presents. I usually get a lot of presents for the New Year. And I always try to give presents to my parents, grandparents and friends.

New Year is the best of holydays. At New Year’s Eve always appears this strange expectation of something big, new and great. Joyful atmosphere is all around. Everybody is busy picking nice Christmas trees, presents and feasts for holyday table. It seems like fairytale since childhood.
Preparations for this celebration are starting early. Everything begins with general cleaning. Than rooms are decorating with beautiful toys, garlands, holiday lights and candles. But most beautiful decorations are New Year and Christmas wreaths with conifer branches, bright ribbons and figures of angels.
Dishes on holyday table are always special. And the most important moment of celebration is coming of New Year with chiming clock. Last toll marks beginning of grand firework which may last for whole hour. Than all guests, relatives and friends, begin celebrations with dances and contests which last for the whole night. And first thing to do at next is to check all presents.
It is best when whether at New Year is cold and snowy. Colorful lights are flashing in all windows. Everybody is celebrating and having fun. Apparently because New Year is mutual celebration it is so much fun to celebrate it.

It is customary to celebrate New Year in Russia with family. People are carefully preparing for this holiday, and adults and children are looking forward to it. Fir-trees are set up and decorated in apartments and houses, everyone gives presents to each other, many guests are invited, and festive tables are laid with various treats. At 12 o’clock at night, when the Kremlin chimes on Red Square in Moscow begin to beat the last minute of the outgoing year, everyone makes wishes for the next year and raises their glasses of champagne. At this last minute of the year ended, the President of Russia congratulates all Russians on the New Coming Year. As soon as the chimes beat off the last blows, volleys of holiday fireworks and salute begin to explode from everywhere. The night sky is lit up with bright, colorful flashes. People congratulate each other on the New Year in coming, wish for the fulfillment of desire and all the best in the New Year.
Children are especially waiting for this holiday, as they believe that Santa Claus will come to them on a magical New Year’s Eve and put gifts under the Christmas tree, which they asked him in their letters to him. Celebration of the New Year brings people together and gives them joyful efforts and cheerful mood. Also, this New Year’s holiday gives people hope for a happy and peaceful life.

I would like to tell you about my favorite holiday – Birthday. Birthday is a very wonderful day.
On the morning of my birthday my mom, dad and my younger brother come to my room to congratulate me.
My mother bakes cake. We look forward to the guests. I am always very glad to meet with my guests. I like to receive gifts.
On this day we have a rich dinner. We dance and sing songs, play games and joke, tell funny stories. I think that my birthday is one of the best days of the year.

I like all holidays. But everyone of them can be made upset, except one. It’s
the New Year. New Year is a holiday for everyone. The people all over the world
welcome the new year at one moment, that’s why I think it’s the most uniting
holiday in the world, because in this moment every person can say that he loves
everyone. I think it is an international holiday.
But in different countries the New Year is celebrated in different days, for
example it can be celebrated on the 1st of September or. Also I’ve heard that
from 2001 year the New Year will be celebrated on the 1st of March by all
countries all over the world. As for me, I think that it was a right
resolution.
There are lots of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New
Year tree glittering in colored lights and decorations. Children always wait
for Father Frost to come and give them a present. Many people consider a New
Year to be a family holiday. But most of the young prefer to spend the New Year
there own having parties. As for me I prefer to see the New Year with my
family, because I meet these New Years last times with my family and after some
years I’ll spend it on my own. I must spend as much time as possible with my
family because in some years I’ll have to leave them to begin my own life and
these holidays may be the last.
Holidays are always a joyous occasion. I
love the variety of holidays such as birthdays of my friends and relatives and
of course my birthday. I also like May holidays when we usually go out with
friends or family, where we make barbecues, play games and just relax in the
first warm days. Halloween is also one of my favorite holidays, when my friends
and I throw a party for which we dress up in carnival costumes. But anyway, my
most favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve.
I love this holiday for the extraordinary magic atmosphere that it brings to
the city and in each house in it. This is the time when every town is
transformed and it looks like a Christmas card. When each house is filled with the
scent of pine, mandarins and delicious pastries. For everyone this period is
time, when one can take at least a little gift and everyone will be happier in
this holiday.
New Year is a time of hope and dreams. We are all waiting when the clock
strikes twelve times and we hope that our dreams will come true! In
anticipation of the holiday people look more hopeful for the future waiting
only the best next year.
In addition to this, the favorite part of this holiday is meeting of whole
family at a large table. Around our table there are always our close friends,
parents and their children. I love feeling this holiday, it fills my family
with warmth and happiness.

In my household we usually start getting ready for New Year in advance: we find the best presents, buy lots of food and adorn our flat with different garlands and the New Year tree. Sometimes we create our own costumes for New Year party because it’s a funny tradition in our family to celebrate the New Year in unusual clothes.
My father is excellent at cooking so he always makes meat dumplings, cooks chicken with oranges and his special vegetable pie. My brother and I cook some salads and my mother bakes fruit tarts. They are fantastic and taste heavenly. After famous supper, we meet with our family friends and head to the downtown to view fireworks, concerts and colorful carnivals. If the weather is nasty we stay at home, watch entertaining shows on TV and set off firecrackers in the yard. New Year’s holidays is the time for traveling and we visit our relatives in other cities too.
I really enjoy celebrating New Year’s holiday and, to my mind, every person looks forward to celebrating it with their family.

Я действительно наслаждаюсь празднованием Нового года, и, на мой взгляд, каждый человек с нетерпением ожидает празднования с семьей.

Описание Нового года
My favourite holiday is the New Year. I always celebrate it with my family. Before the holiday we often visit our friends and relatives and give them presents. We often go to the city centre to see the beautiful New Year tree on the main square.
We always celebrate New Year at home. A week before the holiday we begin to decorate our house with lights and garlands.
We also put up a New Year tree and decorate it with balls, cones, icicles and other toys, tinsel and lights. Under the tree we usually put statuettes of Father Frost and Snow Maiden. We put New Year presents there too.
On the 31 st of December we always cook salads. My mother usually roasts meat and boils potatoes. She always bakes our favourite Napoleon cake. We watch New Year programmes and films on TV.
At about ten o’clock we all sit down at the table and have a meal. Just before midnight we light sparklers and my father opens a bottle of champagne.
We watch the president’s speech on TV, and then while the clock is striking midnight, we make wishes and drink champagne. After that we go to the balcony to watch fireworks.
When we come back into the room we open our presents. I usually get a lot of presents for the New Year. And I always try to give presents to my parents, grandparents and friends.

31 декабря мы всегда готовим салаты. Мама обычно жарит мясо и варит картошку. Она всегда печет наш любимый торт Наполеон. Мы смотрим новогодние программы и фильмы по телевизору.
Около десяти вечера мы все садимся за стол. Незадолго до полуночи мы зажигаем бенгальские огни, и папа открывает бутылку шампанского.
Мы смотрим речь президента по телевизору, а затем, пока часы бьют полночь, загадываем желания и пьем шампанское. После этого мы идем на балкон и смотрим фейерверки.

We serve vegetable salads, pastry, baked chicken and so on. Of course, every year we buy Christmas tree and decorate it with toys and garlands.

A few days before New Year we put up our Christmas tree in the living room. We also decorate other rooms. We put Christmas figurines on the shelves and hang garlands around the house. All these things fill our house with special festive atmosphere.
My mum cooks something special for New Year’s dinner. We all help her. We like to follow the new trend and celebrate New Year wearing same colours as the colour of the animal in Chinese calendar.
For example, when we celebrated the New Year of the Red Monkey, we wore red and orange. It is believed, that following this tradition will bring you lots of luck in the new year.
We usually watch different New Year programmes on TV on this day. When the clock on the Kremlin tower strikes midnight, we, according to the long-standing tradition, make our wishes and give each other compliments of the season. After that we exchange gifts with each other.
When I was little, I always looked forward to the coming of New Year. I am a lot older now but have the same feeling in my heart.
For me, New Year is the night when air is filled with magic, this is the time of new hopes and aspirations, a feeling of easiness and joy. This is the time when I want to live, enjoy my life to the full and move forward!

Для меня Новый год – это ночь, когда в воздухе витает волшебство, это время новых надежд и стремлений, чувство легкости и радости. Это время, когда мне хочется жить, радоваться жизни и идти вперед!
Совсем скоро Новый год. Для меня в этих двух словах столько праздника, столько радости! Первый месяц зимы — время праздничной атмосферы и новогодней суеты не только на улице, но и у себя дома. В декабре обычно у всех большая нагрузка на работе и учёбе. Многие люди стараются завершить все дела, чтобы беззаботно встретить Новый год. А некоторые просто с нетерпением ждут наступления этого волшебного дня, этого грандиозного настроения, подарков, застолья, улыбок, смеха, снега, друзей, родных, и, конечно же, боя курантов! В эти волшебные мгновения каждый хочет попросить исполнения того или иного желания. Но вот проходит этот миг, часы уже пробили полночь, старый год кончился, а заменил его Новый год… И это всё? Вся радость закончилась? Неужели всё пропало до следующего года?!
Конечно же нет! Я считаю, что после наступления нового года становится только интереснее и веселее: всей семьёй выходить запускать фейерверки, после можно просто погулять, поваляться в снегу, поиграть во что-то вместе со взрослыми, несмотря на возраст. А впереди ещё длинные каникулы, которые ты проведёшь со своей семьёй. Но каждый раз ты понимаешь, что Новый год – это замечательный праздник, которым нужно наслаждаться и восхищаться!

Very soon the New year. For me, in these two words, there is so much celebration, so much joy! The first month of winter is a time of festive atmosphere and new year’s bustle not only on the street, but also at home. In December, everyone usually has a heavy workload at work and school. Many people try to complete all their tasks in order to celebrate the New year carelessly. And some just look forward to this magical day, this Grand mood, gifts, feasts, smiles, laughter, snow, friends, family, and, of course, the chimes! In these magical moments, everyone wants to ask for the fulfillment of a particular desire. But this moment passes, the clock has already struck midnight, the old year is over, and the New year has replaced it… And that’s all? All the joy is over? Is everything lost until next year?!
Of course not! I believe that after the new year, it only becomes more interesting and fun: the whole family goes out to launch fireworks, after you can just take a walk, lie in the snow, play something together with adults, regardless of age. After the games, you come home again, and you are all wet and red, but so happy, as if a new life has begun, you are full of positive emotions. I can’t even describe it! And there is nothing better than this moment. Then you go to bed, think about a great time, and you have the most magical dreams. And there’s still a long vacation ahead for you to spend with your family. But every time you realize that the New year is a wonderful holiday that you need to enjoy and admire!
